More tariffs: The same day, United States President Donald Trump threatened to impose 104 percent tariffs on China if it refused to withdraw its retaliatory measures.

After China vowed to “fight to the end,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the tariff increase would come into effect on Wednesday.

Von der Leyen cautioned for “the need to avoid further escalation,” and she emphasized the “importance of stability and predictability for the global economy.”

Diversions: Von der Leyen also stressed Europe’s fear that its market will become flooded with Chinese goods because of the tariffs, and she encouraged China to find alternative routes of trade.

President von der Leyen emphasized China’s critical role in addressing possible trade diversion caused by tariffs, especially in sectors already affected by global overcapacity. The leaders discussed setting up a mechanism for tracking possible trade diversion and ensuring any developments are duly addressed.

Mart of nations: The Bible prophesies Europe and China will lead world trade in the end time. Isaiah 23:1-3 prophesy of a “mart of nations,” or trade alliance, controlled by “Tyre” (modern-day Europe) and “Chittim” (an ancient name for China). Tyre and Chittim are prophesied to work with many nations, but the U.S. will not be one of them.
