Taiwan’s new president, Ma Ying-jeou, has supposedly opened a “new chapter of peace” with Communist China. On May 26, he sent the highest-level Taiwanese political delegation to visit the mainland since the two sides split during the Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949. On the third day of this scheduled six-day visit, the chairman of Taiwan’s Kuomintang political party met with Chinese President Hu Jintao to discuss the resumption of cross-Strait dialogue.

According to the Chinese government news agency Xinhua,

General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (cpc) Central Committee Hu Jintao met with Kuomintang (kmt) Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Wednesday afternoon.Hu said that with the joint efforts of the cpc and kmt, and of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, the political situation in Taiwan has gone through positive changes, and the cross-Strait relationship faces a precious opportunity.”We should cherish this hard-earned situation,” said Hu.He expressed hope that the two parties and both sides across the Strait could make joint efforts to build mutual trust, lay aside disputes, seek consensus and shelve differences, and jointly create a win-win situation.

Only one day after this landmark meeting, Taiwan and China announced they would resume talks within two weeks. These talks, which have been suspended for more than a decade, will take place from June 11 to 14. They will focus mainly on the establishment of direct flights between the two sides and on allowing mainland tourists into Taiwan.

Beijing, which has previously threatened Taiwan with invasion if the self-ruled island ever declared independence, is zealously taking advantage of Taiwan’s new pro-China stance to draw the island as close to the mainland as possible. While Ma Ying-jeou and the new Taiwanese government may think they can secure their home by negotiating with their Communist rival, the fact remains that while Taiwan may have given up its hopes of ruling over mainland China, mainland China has never renounced its ambition to rule over Taiwan. In this light, the current negotiations between Taiwan and China are but the first steps toward a coming annexation of Taiwan to Communist China.
