Islamic State Attacks Airport in Egypt
Islamic State affiliate, the Sinai Province, targeted an airport in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula late Tuesday.
According to security forces, rockets rained down on the airport, which is being used by multinational peacekeeping forces. Immediate reports indicate there were no causalities from the rocket fire. Analysts are concerned the airport attack is part of an Islamic State campaign to destabilize Egypt.
The Sinai Province attacked the same day the Islamic State seized Sirte, a Libyan city to Egypt’s west. The jihadist group posted photographs showing that it has taken full control of the town and a power plant from the Fajr Libya militia.
The power plant supplies electricity to central and western parts of Libya. The Islamic State captured most of Sirte, including its airport, earlier this year. The group has taken advantage of the instability in Libya’s government after the ousting and execution of Muammar Qadhafi in 2011.
