China’s Military Budget to Increase by 7.2 Percent
China’s defense spending will rise 7.2 percent this year according to its Finance Ministry’s draft budget submitted to the National People’s Congress on Sunday. The new national budget devotes 1.6 trillion yuan (us$224 billion) toward military spending, the highest it has been in four years.
Outgoing Premier Li Kequiang told the congress that the People’s Liberation Army (pla) “should work to carry out military operations, boost combat preparedness and enhance military capabilities,” and he emphasized the pla’s goal to modernize its military by 2027.
The armed forces should intensify military training and preparedness across the board, develop new military strategic guidance, devote greater energy to training under combat conditions, and make well-coordinated efforts to strengthen military work in all directions and domains.

Takashi Kawakami, a professor of Takushoku University in Tokyo, warned that China could also use the extra spending for nuclear capabilities.
As China strengthens the new area of cognitive warfare over Taiwan, I think it will also use the budget to build up its cyber and space capabilities, as well as its submarine forces to target undersea cables.

China will also increase its public security budget by 6.4 percent, following a year of the nation’s strongest widespread protests due to the government’s strict Zero-covid policy.
