Russia Using Chemical Weapons in Ukraine
Russian forces admitted to dropping grenades containing illegal tear gas on Ukrainian forces in Krynky, Ukraine, on December 22. The tear gas is prohibited by the Chemical Weapons Convention, which Russia has been a signatory of since 1997.
Chemical weapons: In a Telegram post, the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s 810th Naval Infantry Brigade said it made “a radical change” to its combat strategy in mid-December and has employed the “tactic of dropping [K-51] grenades from drones onto enemy positions … to smoke them out from fortified positions.”
K-51 grenades contain CS gas (2-Chlorobenzalmalononitril), a type of tear gas used for riot control that is banned as a method of warfare.
Done before: This is not the first time Russia has used chemical weapons on Ukraine, however.
In November 2022, the Ukrainian government reported that Russian forces had “repeatedly used K-51 grenades with highly explosive substances” against Ukrainian strongholds.
Putin’s evil: In the May-June 2023 Trumpet, editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote:
The Russia-Ukraine War is giving the world a vivid picture of the scale of evil [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is willing to commit. … Putin is an evil, ruthless, vindictive agent with Soviet-style methods of psychological warfare, assassination and war. He has disgusting and devastating policies that are sick to the core and even satanic!
