Joe Biden’s disastrous performance at last week’s presidential debate has unleashed pent-up concern about his candidacy. At first, it looked like these concerns might die down as the news cycle churned on toward the next talking point. But now some big-name Democratic politicians are calling on Biden to bow out gracefully.

On Tuesday, Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas became the first sitting House Democrat to call on Biden to withdraw from the Democratic ticket. Former Congressman Tim Ryan from Ohio echoed this call, as did former Iowan Senator Tom Harkin, former Housing Secretary Julián Castro and former Democratic National Committee Vice Chair R. T. Rybak. Newsweek is reporting that former Obama administration official Daniella Ballou-Aares is putting together a coalition of business leaders and philanthropists to pressure Biden into dropping out.

Barack Obama has kept quiet so far, apart from a social media post saying “bad debate nights happen.” Yet a number of analysts are noting that Obama may be the only person with the power and influence to convince Biden to step aside. Since 3,894 Democratic Party delegates have already pledged themselves to Joe Biden, there is no way to stop him from becoming the official Democratic Party nominee other than to convince him to willingly resign. Obama may be the only person who can do that.

Biden will be nominated at a virtual convention that starts on July 21, so Democratic Party leaders have less than three weeks to act if they want someone else to run against Donald Trump this autumn.

If Biden willingly withdraws from the race before then, his delegates will be free to back someone else during an open convention. hbo host Bill Maher is advising delegates to rally behind California Governor Gavin Newsom in such a case, yet a new opinion poll is suggesting that Vice President Kamala Harris may be the more popular choice should Biden bow out of the race.

Conservative Treehouse writer Mark Bradman, known as Sundance, is predicting a Harris victory after an open convention if Obama decides to drop Biden. He wrote on July 2:

James Clyburn and Barack Obama are the two Democrats who could unilaterally remove Joe Biden by withdrawing their support. It must frustrate Jill Biden to know The Lightbringer and the Ballot Master have that kind of leverage over her appointments at Tiffanys. As a result of this dynamic, we remind everyone to pay close attention to how Clyburn and Obama are indicating their position. Additionally, it is worth remembering how Obama and Clyburn agreed on Kamala Harris as the VP selection in 2020, and informed Joe Biden who would be on his ticket.

That is definitely worth remembering! Investigative journalist Lee Smith noted four years ago that Harris was Obama’s first choice for president in 2020, but he switched his support to Biden after Harris did poorly in the primaries. He could continue to pull strings behind the scenes in a Harris administration.

Yet Obama’s desire to micromanage America may finally be backfiring on him.

The Democratic Party needs a popular candidate to rally behind if they are going to defeat Donald Trump in November. Obama cannot endorse such a candidate, however, without risking his control over America. Men like Bernie Sanders and Gavin Newsom are not eager to take orders from Obama, so Obama continues to back unpopular candidates like Biden and Harris, who will take orders. This strategy works as long as long as you can flood swing counties with enough unverified ballots to tip the election in your favor. But if Trump wins in a landslide, it may be hard to stuff ballot boxes with enough ballots to steal that victory without getting caught.

A New York Times report on Wednesday said that Biden had told an ally he is weighing whether to continue his bid for reelection in November. The White House dismissed this report as “absolutely false.” Still, it suggests that Biden is thinking about what Rep. Lloyd Doggett and others have asked him. He probably has not made a decision yet, but it is like Bradman says, “James Clyburn and Barack Obama are the two Democrats who could unilaterally remove Joe Biden by withdrawing their support.” We should watch these men—especially Obama—for their reaction.

A Harris administration would be no different from a Biden administration because Barack Obama would still be calling the shots. So whether Biden stays or goes depends entirely upon whether or not Obama thinks Biden is his best bet to beat Trump this November.

The last-minute substitution of a new political candidate in place of Joe Biden would be a dramatic development in this fight. Yet it would not ultimately change the underlying Obama vs. Trump conflict!
