Will Kamala Harris Be the Next Democratic Presidential Nominee?
Kamala Harris announced on Monday she had received enough verbal commitments from delegates to become the Democratic Party’s next presidential nominee.
The official nomination will not be decided until the Democratic National Convention (dnc), beginning August 19, but Harris seems to be the popular choice.
Endorsements: After dropping out of the presidential race, Joe Biden endorsed Harris as his replacement. Many Democrats followed his lead and backed her as well.
However, a few of the party’s leading officials held off their support. Most notably, former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Then on Monday, Pelosi offered Harris her endorsement, which promoted more than 300 Californian delegates to voice their support in a private Zoom call. This endorsement gave Harris the pledged support she needs to be considered for the nomination.
Tonight, I am proud to have secured the broad support needed to become our party’s nominee. … I look forward to formally accepting the nomination soon.
—Kamala Harris
Delegates needed: According to an unofficial Associated Press survey, Harris has support from 2,688 delegates, well over the 1,976 she needs for the convention nomination.
Once the dnc commences, Harris will still need the majority vote of 4,000 convention delegates to secure the presidential nomination.
Obama quiet: Obama still has not offered his support for Harris. Rather than endorsing her immediately after Biden dropped out, Obama said:
I have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges.
McCarthy explains: In an interview Sunday evening, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told Fox News host Laura Ingraham:
I was told by a couple of Democrat congressional members from California that, behind the scenes, Nancy Pelosi says Kamala Harris would be worse than Biden. … They may be pushing her out at the very beginning to see if she collapses really soon, and then bring another Democrat up and have an open race inside the convention.
Cover-up: One would expect that Biden quitting the presidential race would shake up the Democratic Party. Yet most Democrats are still rallying around the same objective.
