Zuckerberg Admits Biden Pressured Him to Censor
Meta ceo Mark Zuckerberg said United States President Joe Biden’s administration “pressured” his company to “censor certain … content, including humor and satire” in 2021. He revealed this in a letter to the House Judiciary Committee on August 26.
Why it matters: The Bill of Rights says the American government “shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech.” Government pressure for a social media company to censor posts on a hot topic defies this constitutional principle.
Details: Zuckerberg admitted to restricting the circulation of posts about covid-19 due to presidential pressure, and posts about Hunter Biden’s laptop due to U.S. intelligence warning the story may be Russian disinformation. He said:
I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it.
About Hunter’s laptop, he said:
It’s since been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story.
Reaction: Zuckerberg said he will stand up to such pressure in the future.
I also think we made some choices that, with the benefit of hindsight and new information, we wouldn’t make today. … I feel strongly that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any administration in either direction—and we’re ready to push back if something like this happens again. … We’ve changed our policies and processes to make sure this doesn’t happen again ….
Censorship prophesied? Bible prophecy foretold that Barack Obama, who leads Biden’s administration, would “cast down the truth to the ground.” But it also reveals Obama’s influence is beginning to weaken. This story shows the fulfillment of both prophecies.
