U.S. Ballots Incinerated in Drop Boxes
Election ballot boxes were set alight with incendiary devices in two states early Monday morning, just eight days out from the United States presidential elections.
Significance: Mail-in ballot boxes were a point of contention leading up to the 2020 election. It was later revealed that the boxes were part of the tactics used to change the outcome of the election. Drop boxes remain a concern, and on Saturday night, Elon Musk called them “a recipe for fraud.”
Damage:
- Hundreds of ballots were destroyed in Vancouver, Washington.
- Three ballots were destroyed in Portland, Oregon. (The damage was limited because of an installed fire suppressant.)
Motives: The identity and motive of those involved are still unknown, but it’s believed the two cases are connected.
Last week, 20 ballots were burned in a drop box in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2020, Massachusetts and California both had a box set alight, incinerating hundreds of ballots.
“It’s a direct attack on democracy,” Clark County auditor Greg Kimsey said about Monday’s incident.
Drop boxes have caused many problems since their introduction in 2020, and the attacks might be part of plans to steal another election.
