China Aggressively Expands Its Nuclear Arsenal

China is set to double its nuclear arsenal to 1,000 warheads within five years, according to a Defense Intelligence Agency report published last week.

“China is undergoing the most rapid expansion and ambitious modernization of its nuclear forces in history,” the report said.

• China has already reached 500 warheads, surpassing 2020’s prediction that it would have 400 by the end of the decade.
• Though still considerably behind Russia’s 5,580 nuclear weapons and America’s 3,700, the Chinese are narrowing the gap.
• China’s current efforts dwarf its nuclear modernization program of a decade ago.
