Canada: Government in Chaos After Finance Minister Resigns
Justin Trudeau’s government has descended into chaos. Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, long an important supporter of Trudeau, resigned from the Liberal cabinet yesterday on the eve of delivering a key fiscal update to Parliament.
Resignation: In her resignation letter, Freeland wrote: “For the past number of weeks, you and I have found ourselves at odds about the best path forward for Canada.” She cited President-elect Donald Trump’s 25 percent tariff threat and Trudeau’s response as a key reason for ending her support:
We need to take that threat extremely seriously. That means keeping our fiscal powder dry, so we have the reserves we may need for a coming tariff war. That means eschewing costly political gimmicks, which we can ill afford and which make Canadians doubt that we recognize the gravity of the moment.
Trudeau was in the process of removing her from her top cabinet post, so Freeland resigned before being shuffled into another position.
Aftereffects: Freeland has been a key ally of Trudeau over the past several years. She held the most important position in the cabinet as finance minister and deputy prime minister. Her public withdrawal is a major blow to Trudeau, creating an atmosphere of chaos and uncertainty.
Freeland will remain a member of Parliament and is positioning herself to be the next Liberal Party leader. However, she has been a key player in bringing about higher inflation, record low productivity and record debt. She is attempting to hide her track record of destruction by jumping off Trudeau’s sinking ship.
Before the end of the day, Trudeau installed loyalist New Brunswick M.P. Dominic LeBlanc as the new finance minister.
To make matters worse, the Liberals lost another by-election in British Columbia, ceding another seat to the surging Conservative opposition.
Trudeau on the brink: The pressure on Trudeau to resign has radically increased. However, short of a vote of no confidence, there is no formal process to remove him from power. The initiative rests in his hands. His options are to suspend Parliament, resign, call an early election, or cling to power until October 2025.
American resurgence: Donald Trump’s return to office is fulfilling several key Bible prophecies in 2 Kings 14:26-27 and Amos 7, as explained in Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry’s book America Under Attack. Trump’s return will trigger a resurgence in American power and strength.
Trump has intervened in Canadian policy by threatening 25 percent tariffs. It appears his political power and influence are changing Canadian politics and may be Trudeau’s undoing.
