Syria-Iran Split: More Proof That God Is in Charge

Do you really see God’s hand guiding world events?

A great many people fail to see God in even the most stunning miracles. Scientists can study the most extraordinary engineering in creation—and see only the work of blind evolutionary forces. When Jesus Christ walked the Earth, people were interacting with the perfect Son of God—yet many saw only a glutton and a drunkard. That is great blindness. We are all susceptible to it.

God is orchestrating global events in remarkable detail in our day. We live in a time of accelerating fulfillment of biblical prophecy. If you know those prophecies, it is truly jaw-dropping to watch them unfold in daily headlines. The Trumpet aims to keep you abreast of them. But you do need to stop, take a moment, and open your eyes to what God is doing.

A crucial biblical prophecy was fulfilled this month. It is the cover story of our newest Trumpet issue. I urge you to read about it and contemplate what it tells you about God and about the sure word of prophecy.

Iran and Syria have been locked in a strategic alliance since the 1980s. In recent years, Syria was considered Iran’s closest ally. But over 12 years ago, our editor in chief, Gerald Flurry, recognized a Bible prophecy showing that these two nations would not be allied—they would end up in entirely different camps.

During the early days of the Syrian civil war in 2012, Mr. Flurry wrote, “Biblical prophecy reveals that, very soon, Syria will no longer align with Iran. It also shows that Germany will help cause this split.” At the time, many people thought Bashar Assad could lose power. Yet nobody was saying a word about this jeopardizing the relationship with Iran.

Well, the civil war simmered down. The threat to Assad’s rule abated. In recent years, Assad was feeling secure and even gaining ground in improving relations with his Arab neighbors. Then at the end of last month, opposition forces launched a major offensive—and within a lightning-fast 13 days, they captured Damascus, and Assad escaped to Russia. The Iranian Embassy was ransacked. Iran’s diplomats and military officials fled. Newspapers worldwide headlined the death of Iran’s “axis of resistance,” of which Syria was a pillar.

Almost overnight, the Iran-Syria alliance was history.

Trumpet readers were not shocked, since we never backed down from that forecast from 2012. But it is still stunning, for several reasons. Here is one.

The factors that violently rent the ties between Iran and Syria are numerous. The war in Ukraine has absorbed Russia’s energies, which reduced its focus in Syria. Israel’s offensive against the enemies that perpetrated the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre spread in recent months to Lebanon and effectively decapitated Iran’s proxy Hezbollah. Europe has been sanctioning Syria for some time, causing genuine hardship among the Syrian people and fomenting popular discontent against the Assad regime. The Syrian military has been affected by this discontent and was full of halfhearted, unwilling soldiers. Turkey threw its support behind Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (hts), green-lighting and supporting this offensive. Germany recently supplied Turkey with drones that ended up being deployed decisively by the hts militants. There are more.

Not even the hts fighters expected to topple Assad. They were amazed at how little resistance they encountered, how easily they conquered town after town, and simply kept pressing forward all the way to Damascus.

None of the agents involved in this event could have brought it about single-handedly, most of them operated in their own interests without coordinating with the others, and most of them weren’t even thinking of trying to divide Iran from Syria. Yet that is exactly what happened.

That is because God is in charge. He issued the prophecy, and He brought it to pass. “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21; New International Version). We need to recognize God’s hand at work when we see it.
