Weather Disasters Intensify Across America
Floods, mudslides and avalanches brought the Pacific Northwest to a standstill on January 8 as highways were inundated and tens of thousands of people were kept from their homes. Several Washington State residential areas have also been destroyed by some of the worst flooding on record. This destruction was kicked off by a devastating storm system that brought down 6 inches of heavy rain and a warm spell that melted vast reserves of Cascade Range snow.
“I think we’re seeing an all-timer, or as bad as anyone has seen,” said Rob Harper, a spokesman for the state Division of Emergency Management. “We just haven’t seen this extent of flooding.”
This flooding, however, is far from the only record-breaking weather-related disaster currently occurring in America.
The National Climatic Data Center (ncdc) reports that western North Carolina is in the midst of its worst drought in over a century. This drought is further complicated by the fact that North Carolina’s population is growing dramatically even as its water supplies dwindle.
“We have huge demands on our water supplies that we didn’t have 50 and 60 years ago,” said ncdc staff member Richard Heim. “We can build reservoirs. We can tap into new rivers and streams, but we’re going to have to learn to manage the water we have and maximize its use. We are going to have drought in the future, guaranteed.”
In North Dakota, a fast-moving blizzard swept across the state on January 12 bringing record snow accumulation and almost zero-visibility. Similar snowstorms in New England resulted in two large chain-reaction collisions—a 59-vehicle pile-up in New Hampshire and a 13-vehicle pile-up in Connecticut.
Winds up to 50 miles per hour in Boulder County, Colorado, transformed two relatively small fires into major wildfires. The residents of approximately 11,000 homes were urged to evacuate the region.
Weather-related disasters across the United States are continuously being labeled as the worst ever.
Yet God promises multiple times throughout the Bible that obedience to Him will result in rain in due season, when and where it is needed (Leviticus 26:4; Deuteronomy 11:14; 28:12).
The weather we see today is the result of mankind choosing its own way instead of relying on God. God warned of the consequences for this choice through the Prophet Amos: “I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it to not rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered” (Amos 4:7).
This worsening weather trend is a warning from Almighty God that we need to turn away from materialism, false religion and our multitudinous sins, and turn to Him and the only way of life that will bring true abundance and happiness.
