Hamas Rockets Can Reach Tel Aviv
Iran has smuggled rockets to Hamas that have a range of 37 miles—enough to reach Tel Aviv from the Gaza Strip—according to Israel’s head of military intelligence, Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin.
Israel tracked a missile as Hamas test fired it last week into the Mediterranean Sea, Yadlin told the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday. It traveled 60 kilometers, or 37 miles—making it one of the longest-range missile Hamas has ever tested.
Hamas probably has dozens of these weapons, a top defense official said. Other security sources cited by the Jerusalem Post said that Hamas could reverse engineer these rockets and discover how to build them in Gaza.
Yadlin also warned that Hamas had accelerated its efforts to restore both its ground forces and rocket capabilities, since the terrorist lost or used up many of their weapons in the Gaza war just under one year ago. He stated that although Hamas’s rocket arsenals are now better off than they were before the war, the terrorist group is not yet as powerful as it wants to be.
In addition, he said, Hamas had accelerated its efforts to restore and improve both its ground forces and its rockets. According to Yadlin, Hamas was now in a better position as far as its rocket capabilities were concerned than it was before Cast Lead.
United Press International speculated that the missile in question could be the Fajr-5 missile. The Fajr-5 is an artillery rocket developed by Iran in the 1990s, and has a maximum range of 50 miles. If the missile Hamas tested really is a Fajr-5, then both Jerusalem and Dimona—the home of Israel’s nuclear reactor—would be within range.
The Jerusalem Post’s security sources also stated that Hezbollah had the same missile in southern Lebanon. Yadlin said that Hezbollah was stockpiling weapons in civilian houses south of the Litani River.
In an overnight raid Tuesday, the Israeli Navy discovered hundreds of tons of weaponry on a ship near Cyprus. Defense officials stated that the ship Francop was carrying weapons from Iran to Syria and Hezbollah.
The ship was carrying Katyusha missiles, assault rifles, mortar shells and grenades, and also contained an advanced anti-aircraft platform that has not been used in the region before, according to Israel Radio.
These events show that Iran’s power around Israel is increasing. Watch for Tehran to continue to threaten Israel from as many angles as possible. For more information, see our booklet Jerusalem in Prophecy.
