America Has More Spanish Speakers Than Spain

America now has more Spanish speakers than Spain.

A new study by the Instituto Cervantes found that while Mexico still has the most Spanish speakers by a large margin, the United States now comes in second. With over 53 million Spanish speakers, America now has 6 million more than the entire population of Spain. Forty-seven percent of people in New Mexico speak Spanish, 38 percent in California and 30 percent in Texas. According to the Census Bureau, more than 20 percent of Americans speak a language other than English while at home.
