China Renews Ties With Venezuela
Venezuela and China are renewing their relationship after years of cooling ties, according to a report by Bloomberg published on May 2. High-ranking officials from China met with close aides to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas last month to discuss the nation’s long-standing debt to China. The two nations also talked about other areas of collaboration such as telecommunications and oil.
President Maduro emphasized the strengthened relationship between China and Venezuela during a March 27 live broadcast bidding farewell to Chinese Ambassador Li Baorong.
Today, the relationship between China and Venezuela has reached its highest level of mutual trust, collaboration and work. We will continue to deepen our strategic relations with China even more.
—Nicolás Maduro
Venezuelan oil trade: In 2019, the United States imposed sanctions on Venezuela, which has the world’s largest oil reserves, in an effort to drive Maduro from power. Falling oil revenue is a major factor in the ongoing Venezuelan crisis. Stronger ties to China would offer Maduro a powerful ally, as well as renewed demand for oil sales. Venezuela has also used oil as part of its repayment of nearly 80 percent of the total debt it owed China.
China in Latin America: China is increasing its influence across Latin America while tensions with the U.S. intensify. China recently reached out to Cuba, calling for stronger cooperation between the two socialist countries. Last month, President Xi Jinping met with visiting Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, underscoring the mutual interest between China and Latin America’s biggest economy. The power China is building in Venezuela, Cuba, Brazil and other Latin American nations presents a major danger to the U.S.
The Trumpet says: China will continue boosting its ties in Latin America. Bible prophecy indicates that an alliance between China, Russia, Europe and Latin America will economically besiege the U.S. The March 2019 Trumpet states:
Now the U.S. is allowing Russia and China to forge alliances with Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. This is setting the stage for a time when an alliance of hostile nations will finally lay siege to America ….
