China’s Planned Military Training Base in Cuba Would Put PLA Troops on U.S. Doorstep

Chinese and Cuban officials plan to build a joint military training base on Cuba’s northern coast, the Wall Street Journal reported on June 20. The news caused fear among Americans since the base could station Chinese troops and weaponry just 100 miles from the United States’ coast in Florida.

The Wall Street Journal’s report, based on testimony from U.S. officials familiar with classified American intelligence, said discussions for the base are at “an advanced stage.” It added that the facility “could provide China with a platform to potentially house troops permanently on the island and broaden its intelligence gathering, including electronic eavesdropping, against the U.S.”

Espionage: The report comes just 10 days after the U.S. government declassified intelligence revealing that China has had an operational spy base in Cuba that was significantly upgraded in 2019. The facility is believed to enable Chinese intelligence operatives to listen in on electronic communications throughout the southeastern United States.

America endangered: Meanwhile, China is also strengthening its position in Venezuela and Nicaragua, which, like Cuba, lie astride vital U.S. shipping routes. America depends on these routes for shipping and receiving critical commodities.

This geographic reality is why Russia and China want to challenge U.S. dominance in the Caribbean. These aspiring superpowers are forging alliances with socialist governments in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. If these Latin dictatorships become staging grounds for Russia and China, a coalition of nations could potentially cut off U.S. access to the Panama Canal and seal off the Straits of Florida and the Yucatán Channel.
