Head of Security Conference Calls for European Nuclear Deterrence
Christoph Heusgen, the head of the Munich Security Conference, warned in an interview with Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, published on December 31, that the American nuclear umbrella might disappear one day and called for Europe to seriously discuss a common nuclear deterrence at the Munich Security Conference in February.
The French proposal: When Heusgen was asked if he supports French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal to talk about a joint European use of the French nuclear umbrella, he noted:
We should talk about it, including with the British, what would happen if the worst comes to the worst.
What is the worst-case scenario?
That our life insurance through the American nuclear umbrella might disappear one day. You quoted Donald Trump’s threat. Even if this may be an empty threat, it sends a difficult signal. …
There are different interpretations of what exactly Macron has in mind. It would be good if all Europeans talked more intensively with the British and French about nuclear deterrence issues. The Munich Security Conference in February could provide a good opportunity for this. If Macron were to make another move, the new German government should urgently respond to it. The Franco-German engine has not been running smoothly recently.
Uniting Europe’s militaries: Heusgen also said Europe’s militaries should “join forces.”
Although defense is a core area of national sovereignty, we need to join forces as Europeans much more than before. This means setting common standards, procuring more together, and thinking about joint financing. We can no longer afford around 150 different weapons systems in Europe, six times as many as the U.S.A. We simply don’t have the means. We need to overcome the narrow focus on national industrial interests.

Fulfilled prophecy: In the March 1950 Plain Truth, founder Herbert W. Armstrong stated that “the nations of Europe, directly in the very shadow of the great Russian bear, are becoming disturbed, distrustful of America, and thinking more and more about uniting themselves into a united states of Europe.”
