95 Killed in Tibet Earthquake
At least 95 people were killed and 130 were injured after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake shook Tibet, China, Tuesday morning.
The epicenter of the quake was in Tingri, southern Tibet, with tremors felt as far out as Nepal, Bhutan, India and Bangladesh.
- China reported a 6.8-magnitude quake.
- Later, the United States Geological Survey said it recorded the magnitude as 7.1.
- Aftershocks have been around 4.4 in magnitude.
- Tremors of 4.5 magnitude shook Mount Everest, but it is unknown if any climbers were on the mountain.
Damage: Major damage was caused to homes, buildings and highways throughout the area. According to Chinese state media, more than 1,000 homes were damaged in a single county.
Around 1,500 rescue workers have been deployed to search for victims trapped under rubble and to begin cleaning up the wreckage.
Purpose: Earthquakes are common in this region around the Himalayas because it sits on the edge of two tectonic plates. However, the people shaken and crushed by these quakes are not mere victims of chance.
