Indonesia Joins BRICS Bloc
Indonesia was officially welcomed on Monday as a full member of brics, the anti-Western organization named after its first five members: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Expansion:
- Last year, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates joined the coalition.
- Earlier this year, Indonesia, along with Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan joined as observer “partner countries.”
Indonesia now becomes the 10th full-fledged member.
Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that “brics membership is a strategic way to increase collaboration and partnership with other developing nations.”
Regional power: Indonesia has an annual gross domestic product of $1 trillion, is a global leader in nickel and tin production, and has the world’s fourth-largest population.
China praised Indonesia’s induction into the alliance, recognizing its potential to “positively contribute to the development of the brics mechanism.”
Future: While brics nations are not bound together economically or militarily and have little real cohesion at present, brics does have the potential to transition into a more meaningful alliance prophesied in your Bible.
