Man Arrested on Suspicion of Starting Los Angeles Fire

A man suspected of starting the Kenneth Fire in Los Angeles was arrested on Thursday.

Residents in Woodland Hills said the suspect was riding around on a bicycle with a blow torch Thursday afternoon, trying to light old Christmas trees and garbage cans on fire. The residents detained him, and he was later arrested by police.

Senior lead officer Charles Dinsel said the incident is being “investigated as a crime,” although it is not yet known if the man was responsible for starting any active fires.

Some reports say the suspect is a homeless man in his 30s. Officials have neither denied nor confirmed this.

Damage: The Kenneth Fire began around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon and quickly spread to engulf over 800 acres, Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley said. It is one of five fires currently blazing through Los Angeles.

The five fires have now consumed nearly 47 square miles of Los Angeles County and have killed 10 people.

Looting: At least 20 people were also arrested on Wednesday and Thursday for looting homes damaged by the fires.

Some residents are now hiring private security guards to protect their properties.

Curses: The fires burning through Los Angeles are some of the worst the state has ever experienced. California is currently plagued by calamities, and criminals are taking advantage of it.
