The Collapse of the Obama Doctrine

How a dangerous foreign policy helped fulfill Bible prophecy

The Middle East is transforming. The sudden collapse of Bashar Assad’s regime in Syria and the dismantling of Hamas and Hezbollah have flipped Middle Eastern power dynamics. Since Oct. 7, 2023, Iran has lost power, and Israel is ascendant. Russia’s influence in Syria is waning, leaving a power vacuum.

These events have shattered the American foreign-policy structure that has shaped the Middle East for more than a decade. President Barack Obama’s infamous speech in Cairo, Egypt, on June 4, 2009, began the era of “the Obama doctrine.” His policies started the Arab Spring, changing the balance of power that had been extant in the region since 1979.

The Obama doctrine was not just any philosophical foreign policy. Behind it was a devious spirit of destruction. That same spirit was behind all of Obama’s domestic policies, which fundamentally transformed our constitutional republic.

As Obama’s influence in politics has diminished with the return of President Donald Trump, so has the Obama doctrine collapsed in the Middle East. It appears Obama’s legacy, domestic and foreign, is being erased from the world scene.

This astounding development fulfills several key Bible prophecies. And the Bible foretells what will replace the Obama doctrine in the Middle East.

The Obama Doctrine

After Obama’s speech in Cairo, Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote:

The president said, “No single nation should pick and choose which nations hold nuclear weapons.” In other words, he believes America by itself should not prevent another nation from getting nuclear bombs—a signal to the world that America the superpower is dead! That means America has no right to forcefully stop Iran’s nuclear program, even though Iran is the number one terrorist-sponsoring nation in the world by far!

But if the United States does not stop Iran, currently only one other nation will: Israel. And Obama also implied that the Israelis had better not bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities—or America will be against them! What kind of a “superpower” is that?

This signaled a tidal shift in American policy: America was no longer the world policeman confronting Iran’s terrorist network, and it would prevent Israel from halting Iran’s aggressive strategy. But it was even worse than that.

In hindsight, it is clear the newly elected “messiah” had an intricate strategy from the start. Obama invited the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood (with links to Iran) to the speech, legitimizing the group’s desire to oust Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Why did Obama speak in Cairo? Egypt was the main Arab counterweight against Iran. Its peace pact with Israel prevented Iran from fully utilizing its proxies to attack Israel and countered Iran’s desire to have a presence along the Mediterranean Sea and Suez Canal. Obama’s speech signaled it was time for radical revolution.

Mr. Flurry warned that violent change was on the horizon:

When America’s president gives a speech like that, the terrorists have contempt for such weakness and are stirred to fight even harder. They can smell the victory. So we can expect violent terrorism to intensify and shake the nations! …

President Obama’s speech is a great turning point in this world. It is going to play a major role in terrifying prophecies of your Bible being fulfilled.

This speech declared the beginning of the Obama doctrine, which essentially aimed to empower Iran and undermine Israel.

The Arab Spring

Within 18 months of the Cairo speech, the Arab Spring began. Radical Islamists overthrew the governments of Egypt, Libya and Tunisia. The Twitter Files exposed just how far Obama was willing to go: He used social media, with the support of the State Department, to bring about regime change in these nations. These were the first steps to destabilizing Israel’s security and helping Iran.

In the ensuing years, Obama worked to preserve the regime of Bashar Assad, who was aligned with Iran. He never held Assad to account for using chemical weapons. Obama also used political pressure to ensure the survival of Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was a constant thorn in Obama’s side. Obama took every opportunity to embarrass, sideline and denigrate Netanyahu.

In April 2016, Jeffrey Goldberg, a close friend of Obama’s, published an article in the Atlantic titled “The Obama Doctrine.” It showcased the president as an intellectual statesman who carefully weighed the “calculus” of power, especially in the Middle East. But it was all a cover for the worst foreign-policy decision in American history: the Iran nuclear deal.

Obama was the chief architect of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (jcpoa), or Iran nuclear deal. The deal safeguarded Iran’s ability to develop weapons of mass destruction.

What was the effect of the Obama doctrine? Iran became a dominant and aggressive power, as prophesied and explained in Mr. Flurry’s booklet The King of the South.

Turmoil by Design

Why would a U.S. president want to empower the leading state sponsor of terrorism? In Great Again, Mr. Flurry explains: “Mr. Obama’s appeasement of and support for the Iranian regime cannot be explained logically. Such a catastrophic policy can only be understood in the context of the satanic deception that blankets this entire world (Revelation 12:9).”

The spirit behind the Obama doctrine can only be addressed through Bible prophecy. 2 Kings 14:27 describes it: “And the Lord said not that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven: but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.” In America Under Attack, Mr. Flurry explains how Obama led a Communist movement to blot out America, Britain and the State of Israel. The Obama doctrine is about destruction.

By the end of Obama’s first two terms, Iran was flush with cash, was advancing its nuclear program, had a land bridge to the Mediterranean Sea, was allied with Russia, and had Israel surrounded by terrorist proxies. The Islamic State destabilized Iraq, making it easier for Iran to dominate.

But in 2017, President Donald Trump withdrew from the jcpoa, reimposed sanctions on Iran, and immediately began negotiating a moderate Arab counterweight to Iran based around Saudi Arabia. The result of these efforts was the Abraham Accords.

Trump also reversed Obama’s oppression of Israel, supported Netanyahu, and killed Iran’s Quds Force commander Qassem Suleimani.

When Joe Biden became president in 2021, in many ways the Obama doctrine became stronger and more destructive. That is because Biden’s term was Obama’s third term: Now his agenda could be pursued without accountability.

The Biden regime was determined to destroy Netanyahu. By using social media (just like in the Arab Spring), Obama funded radical-left groups inside Israel in an attempt to push Netanyahu out of power. In Lebanon, Biden funded Hezbollah’s intelligence branch to counter Israel. Funding for Hamas continued, and Iran became more aggressive in the Red Sea, disrupting seaborne trade.

The Obama doctrine’s peak was Oct. 7, 2023—Israel’s 9/11. Hamas terrorists invaded Israel, murdered 1,139 Jews, and took 251 hostages. This was Obama’s goal: Empower Iran to destroy Israel.

Silenced

The October 7 massacre roused Israel to action. The Israel Defense Forces slowly dismantled the terrorist network throughout the Gaza Strip. In April 2024, when Hamas holed up in Rafah, Biden pressured Netanyahu to call a ceasefire instead of attack.

For nearly 16 years, Obama had restrained Netanyahu from a decisive strike against Iran or its proxies. In the January 2023 Trumpet, Mr. Flurry wrote: “Satan has hung a curtain of fear. Those who are afraid to confront Obama, in reality, fear Satan the devil.” When Netanyahu attacked Rafah on May 6, defying Obama’s shadow presidency, it tore down this curtain of fear. Obama’s influence in the Middle East was silenced.

This paralleled Obama being silenced in American politics, which Mr. Flurry prophesied in the September 2024 Trumpet: “Obama is being silenced. He has not yet been silenced, but these verses (Amos 7:7-8, which flow from verses 1-6) show that in the end, he will be totally silenced!”

In the past 12 months, Iran has been weakened, setting the stage for the next fulfillment of Bible prophecy.

A New Middle East Doctrine

With the Obama doctrine gone, a new movement will fill the vacuum. A new alliance is forming against the king of the south: a Sunni Arab alliance formed with Turkey and a German-led Europe, prophesied in Psalm 83. This prophecy is fully explained in The King of the South.

Donald Trump’s Abraham Accords formed the foundation for this new alliance. The collapse of the regimes in Syria and Lebanon created a vacuum Germany wants to fill. The Bible reveals the European superstate will have its own imperial ambitions in the Middle East directly in confrontation with Iran.

Yet the Bible reveals that the spirit behind the Psalm 83 alliance is the same as the Obama doctrine: “They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance” (verse 4).

Barack Obama has been miraculously silenced, but don’t be fooled by the appearance of a new alliance under the guise of peace. The Obama doctrine and the Psalm 83 alliance are guided by the same spirit of destruction. They intend to blot out the name of Israel.

Despite this short-term bad news, all these prophecies are building to the establishment of the Kingdom of God. Jesus Christ will return and finally bring peace to the Middle East.
