Canada to Hold Elections on April 28

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Sunday that Canada will hold elections on April 28, citing the need for urgent elections in the face of threats from United States President Donald Trump.

We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump’s unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty. There is so much more to do to secure Canada, to invest in Canada, to build Canada, to unite Canada. That’s why I’m asking for a strong positive mandate from my fellow Canadians. I’ve just requested that the governor general dissolve Parliament and call an election for April 28, and she has agreed.
—Mark Carney

In Canada, issues relating to Parliament and elections must receive royal assent from the governor general, the personal representative of Canada’s head of state, King Charles.

The race begins: Carney, the new leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, and his main opponent, Conservative party leader Pierre Poilievre, now have five weeks to carry out their election campaigns.

While other political parties are in the race, the Liberal and Conservative parties are the two most likely to be able to form a government.

Trump derangement: Under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, support for the Liberal Party tanked. However, due to the trade war with America and repeated criticism and threats from President Trump, a sense of nationalism in Canada is rising that is strengthening Liberal Party support again.

President Trump will be the main issue of Canada’s next election. Both Carney and Poilievre have promised Canadians they will stand up to him.
