Putin Calls to ‘Finish Off’ Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday called for a “transitional administration” in Ukraine and vowed his army would “finish off” Ukrainian troops.

The remarks came as United States President Donald Trump has been pushing for a ceasefire.

UN-led government: Putin said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose term expired last year, does not have the legitimacy to sign a peace deal. He suggested Russia could discuss with Europe and the U.S. the possibility of a temporary United Nations-led government in Ukraine.

This would be in order to hold democratic elections, to bring to power a capable government trusted by the people and then to begin with it talks on a peace agreement and sign legitimate documents.

The call is part of long-standing Russian efforts to install a pro-Russia government in Kyiv.

Elections? It would be almost impossible for Ukraine to hold a valid election with more than 5 million Ukrainian citizens displaced and hundreds of thousands fighting in the war.

By calling for an election, Putin is likely trying to divide and distract Ukrainians while he gains territory and works to “finish off” its troops.

Putin’s persistence: Though it may seem Putin is open to peace talks for a ceasefire in Ukraine, statements like these show he still aims to fully conquer the country. A ceasefire deal would likely not last long.
