Muslim Brotherhood wants to revoke peace pact with Israel
On Thursday, the deputy leader of the Muslim Brotherhood called on the next leader of Egypt to abolish the 32-year peace treaty with Israel. “After President Mubarak steps down and a provisional government is formed, there is a need to dissolve the peace treaty with Israel,” Muslim Brotherhood deputy leader Rashad al-Bayoumi told Japan’s nhtv.
The Washington Times called the Egypt-Israel peace treaty “the cornerstone of stability for the Middle East.” Former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations Dan Gillerman said that if Egypt canceled the treaty, “it will be a very unfortunate development for Egypt and Israel. Both countries have enjoyed a peace for 30 years, admittedly not a very warm peace, but a cold peace is better than a hot war.”
Israel has been warily watching the recent developments in Egypt. According toSpiegel last week, “The Israeli government has noted with concern the fact that, even after 30 years of peace, Egypt’s army is still equipped and trained mainly with a possible war against Israel in mind.”
Some members in the U.S. Congress are awakening to the danger of the Muslim Brotherhood taking the helm after Mubarak. In a speech on Wednesday, Illinois Sen. Mark Steven Kirk said, “While we support human rights and democracy, we must heed growing warnings about the Muslim Brotherhood, their leaders and plans for taking Egypt back to the 13th century.”
But President Obama has not heeded these warnings. Not only has he failed to prevent the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood—he has worked to support their rise, as we wrote on Friday.
Jeffrey Kuhner wrote in the Washington Times that losing Egypt as an American ally would “be one of the most dramatic and devastating foreign-policy defeats for the United States in decades. It also will be a significant victory for the forces of radical Islam—a blow that threatens to undermine American interests across the Middle East.”
Kuhner wrote that if Egypt goes Islamic, it will “reverberate across the entire region. The balance of power will tip irreversibly into the hands of Muslim hard-liners.”
Since taking office, President Obama’s efforts to reach out to the Muslim world have only strengthened radical Islamists. “Mr. Obama’s appeasement policies are naive and dangerous. Their net effect has been to embolden and strengthen radical Islam. Under his watch, Muslim extremists are on the march. Egypt is about to fall. Hezbollah controls Lebanon. Iraq is ravaged with suicide bombings, while Christian sects are being exterminated. The Taliban are surging in Afghanistan. Entire regions of Pakistan are infested with jihadists. Turkey is becoming more fundamentalist,” Kuhner wrote.
